Microsoft stops working with virtual reality and fires people
Microsoft seems to think that virtual reality has no future. The giant fired all employees responsible for the development of HoloLens, as well as virtual and mixed reality tools.
Virtual reality does not generate as much interest as expected. Microsoft has fired the teams responsible for creating the HoloLens helmet, as well as virtual and mixed reality tools.
AltSpaceVR (bought by Microsoft in 2017), which worked on a social platform for communication, also fell under the reduction. The startup will be closed on March 10, which will put an end to Microsoft's encroachments into the metaverse.
The team responsible for the Mixed Reality Tool Kit framework has been fired. This is a tool for integrating Unity VR and working with virtual reality helmets such as HoloLens.
Previously, Microsoft had high hopes for military interest in the HoloLens helmet, and in 2021 won a $22 billion contract to develop the IVAS (Integrated Vision Aids System) project, which included the creation of an AR system for soldiers based on HoloLens 2. But the US Congress has put forward serious objections to the technology, as testing showed "mission-impairing physical impairments" associated with headaches, eye fatigue, and nausea after three hours of using the device.
