Easy as pie: tips for oral care

March 20 is World Oral Health Day.

The oral cavity is the most important part of the human body. It is the initial section of the digestive system and reflects the state of many organs. About 3.5 billion people worldwide suffer from oral diseases. One of the most common problems is dental caries. To prevent diseases that can cause discomfort to a person throughout life, it is worth carefully monitoring the condition of the oral cavity. Savinova Natalya Faritovna, dental hygienist of JSC "Medicina" (clinic of academician Roitberg) gave recommendations on caring for her.

Proper nutrition

Each person has an individual diet. To preserve the health of the oral cavity, both adults and children should exclude foods high in sugar from the diet. It is better to give preference to vegetables and fruits. This greatly reduces the risk of tooth decay, since sugar is the main food for bacteria that cause cavities or periodontitis. Instead of coffee and sugary carbonated drinks, you should drink more pure water.

Limiting alcohol and smoking

Smoking and alcohol do not directly affect the health of the oral cavity, but can cause a decrease in immunity and adversely affect the production of saliva. Saliva neutralizes harmful acids, kills microbes, prevents tooth decay and gum disease, protects enamel, accelerates wound healing. It is important to remember that nicotine, found in tobacco, suppresses the development of immune cells in the brain and increases the risk of oral cancer.

Compliance with oral hygiene

Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day for two minutes, preferably using a fluoride toothpaste. When brushing your teeth, do not press too hard on them - this can damage the enamel. You can use dental floss to remove plaque.

Regular dental consultations

Even in the absence of complaints, a visit to the dentist once every six months is necessary. A timely trip to the doctor will help to identify the disease at an early stage and cure it. It is also helpful to have your teeth professionally cleaned at the dentist. This procedure allows you to strengthen the enamel, remove dark plaque and tartar. Children should visit the dentist regularly from the age of two or three, since caries can appear even in a one and a half year old baby.

A healthy oral cavity is not only the absence of diseases, but also an aesthetic appearance. Bad breath, damaged teeth and a thick layer of plaque on the tongue indicate the presence of pathologies in the body that require treatment.
