Qatar bans sale of products 'containing insects'

The reason for the ban is that such products "do not meet the requirements of halal food."

The Qatari government is imposing a ban on the sale of products "containing insects" due to "not meeting the requirements for halal food" after the European Union approved the marketing of various types of insects for food.

Qatar's Ministry of Health noted that its ban is "consistent with the relevant regulations and religious views of the competent authorities that prohibit the consumption of insects or proteins and supplements derived from them."

Insects are being consumed around the world as a source of protein amid growing pressure to find alternatives to meat and other high greenhouse gas foods.
