Europe fuels debate over telecom investment

The European Commission has launched a preliminary consultation to analyze whether big technology companies such as Apple, Google, Netflix or Amazon, among others, should pay part of the cost of maintaining and upgrading the telecommunications infrastructure.

There is a broad debate in Europe over who should take on the investment to maintain and upgrade the telecommunications infrastructure.

The largest operators in the region - Telefonica, Orange, Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom - believe that big technology companies such as Google, Apple, Netflix or Amazon, among others, should make their economic contribution to this cause. The latter refuse. That is why the European Commission has decided to start preliminary consultations to shed light on this issue.

European Union regulators are asking the public, as well as companies and organizations, to give their opinion on this matter. The survey will be open for 12 weeks - until May 19. However, this initiative has already been met with rejection by the CCIA, an association of several companies that will be affected if the approach backed by the big telcos is implemented.
