Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer of its upcoming historical epic The Woman King. It will premiere in cinemas on September 16. Actress Viola Davis, Oscar winner, appears on screen as a brave "Amazon" trying to protect her kingdom from the sinister forces of darkness.

The plot of the picture is based on real events and inspired by the history of the West African kingdom of Dahomey. Davis plays Naniska, the leader of an army made up entirely of women, passionate defenders of their homeland. The story will also trace the fate of a new recruit, Navi. He joins the army to keep his people and all of Africa from being enslaved.
