Stephen King on Twitter fee hikes: "They should be paying me"

The 75-year-old writer strongly disagrees with Ilon Musk's plan to change the verification of accounts.

Stephen King is one of several American cultural figures who has publicly condemned Ilon Musk's idea to increase fees for official Twitter accounts. Now the pages of commercial companies, public organizations and celebrities are distinguished from those of ordinary users by a blue icon with a white check mark in the center, Twitter Blue, and a monthly fee of $5.

According to several sources at once, Musk is seriously considering raising the monthly fee for Twitter Blue to $20 a month after buying the social network last week. "The entire verification process is being reviewed right now," he wrote on Oct. 30, without any clarifying comments.

"$20 for my blue badge? What the hell, they should be paying me. If it's set, I'll be cheated like I was with Enron," the "king of horrors" commented on the possible raise. To which Musk responded, "We have to pay the bills somehow! Twitter can't rely entirely on advertisers. How about $8?" The businessman added that he would give a more detailed explanation on the decision before it was made. "This is the only way to defeat bots and trolls," he noted.
