If a person experiences a strong and irresistible thirst, this may indicate the presence of serious health problems.
Doctors note that constant and excessive need for fluid often serves as a kind of "marker" of several endocrine disorders.
According to the recommendations of specialists, per kilogram of body weight of an adult per day there should be more than 30 milliliters of water. Thus, depending on their weight, a person should drink about 2-2.5 liters of liquid daily. At the same time, an excess of water for a healthy individual is unlikely.
However, if thirst becomes excessive, and the need for drinking is continuous, this may be one of the symptoms of serious pathologies. As a rule, unbearable thirst is associated with carbohydrate metabolism disorders, including type 2 diabetes. Doctors note that increased thirst becomes a kind of "litmus test" that indicates problems with the regulation of blood sugar levels.

In addition to diabetes, excessive thirst may also indicate other endocrine disorders. For example, it may be a symptom of kidney disease, in which the ability of this organ to maintain water-salt balance is impaired. A similar picture is observed in diabetes insipidus - a rare hormonal disorder that causes profuse urination and, as a result, thirst.
An increased need for fluid can also be observed in other conditions associated with general dehydration of the body. For example, we are talking about high body temperature, accompanied by increased evaporation of moisture, or side effects of taking certain medications, such as diuretics or antidepressants.
Therefore, any manifestations of strong and unbearable thirst, especially in combination with other symptoms, require immediate medical attention. Only a specialist will be able to conduct the necessary examinations and identify the possible causes hidden behind this troubling condition of the patient. Timely diagnosis and prescription of adequate treatment will help prevent serious consequences that can result from various endocrine disorders accompanied by thirst.
