The most common mobile device batteries were found to be not so safe for use in hot weather.

Denis Kuvikov, director of the regional engineering center SafeNet of the National Technological Initiative, told reporters that smartphones in hot weather can catch fire even in the pocket.

"Certain types of batteries can catch fire or can puff up when exposed to high temperatures, even in your pocket... If your mobile device is powered by a lithium-ion or lithium-polymer battery, which are the most common types of batteries, you can experience a thermal runaway phenomenon that can cause the battery to spontaneously combust," the expert said.

In addition, the expert noted that to reduce unnecessary heating of the mobile device we can turn off Bluetooth and GPS, Wi-Fi and automatic application updates when they are not needed.
