Nike pulls support for its innovative Adapt BB model
A significant event has taken place in the world of high-tech sports shoes.
Not long ago, Nike produced the revolutionary Adapt BB sneakers, equipped with intelligent automatic lacing functions and control via a mobile app. However, now the brand has announced a complete end of support for these innovative models, depriving their owners of key “smart” features.
Starting August 6, Adapt BB users will lose the ability to adjust the laces and control the built-in lighting via a special mobile app. The only way to interact with the intelligent shoe system will now be the physical buttons located directly on the sneakers themselves.
Thanks to these buttons, Adapt BB owners will be able to turn on and off intelligent functions, monitor the battery level, and adjust the lacing density - tighten or loosen it. In addition, a choice of preset operating modes will be available.
However, a much more serious limitation will be the complete cessation of support for mobile applications required to control Adapt BB. These programs will cease to function on all types of devices, and subsequent iOS updates may negatively affect the operation of applications that were previously installed on Apple smartphones.
It is worth noting that Adapt BB is a commercial continuation of the legendary Nike Mag series of sneakers, which were first introduced in 2011 and became famous thanks to the cult film Back to the Future 2. At the same time, the cost of Adapt BB models was $ 350.
Thus, Nike is effectively refusing to support its "smart" shoes, depriving them of key intellectual functions. This decision may greatly disappoint fans of innovative technologies in sports shoes, who were counting on the further development and improvement of such solutions.
The reasons that prompted Nike to take such a radical step remain unclear. It is likely that the production and maintenance of Adapt BB simply did not justify itself from a commercial point of view due to insufficient demand among consumers. In addition, it is possible that the company faced insurmountable technical difficulties in providing long-term support for the smart functions of sneakers. In any case, the end of support for Adapt BB marks the end of the era of “smart” sports shoes in their current form. Perhaps in the future, Nike or other manufacturers will return to developing similar innovative solutions, but taking into account the accumulated experience and correcting the mistakes of the past. In the meantime, Adapt BB owners are forced to accept the fact that their sneakers will turn into ordinary models with basic physical functions.
