The most controversial Oscar outfits: then and now
Let's remember the fashion blunders of some stars, when even experienced stylists made mistakes.
Not every image at the presentation of the main film award of the year, the Oscars, deserves admiration. Over the years, celebrities have proven that they're not immune to style mistakes—and not even their designers. Some fashion fails included ill-fitting silhouettes and confusing fabrics and colors. Like, for example, the swan dress of singer Björk at the 2001 ceremony. In this review, we will recall several more similar escapades, which, if they did not make the stars laugh, then provoked active discussion among viewers and fashion experts.
Zoe Saldana, 2023
The star of the Avatar franchise has an exotic beauty. In her ancestry, she has Puerto Rican, Irish, Jamaican, Indian and other roots. But the lingerie-style Fendi dress reminded US Weekly experts of a nightie. The style undoubtedly emphasized the actress’s slender figure, the color was a pleasant soft pink shade, but the overall impression left much to be desired.
Laura Dern, 2021
The actress left the ceremony not empty-handed, but with an Oscar for best performance in a supporting role in the film “A Marriage Story.” To receive the statuette, she appeared on stage in a dress with a fluffy skirt from Oscar de la Renta. Maybe the ostrich feathers themselves weren't a bad idea, but when combined with the sleek black, closed top, they practically swallowed up Dern, leaving her no opportunity to truly shine at the awards.
Kristen Wiig, 2020
The bright red dress from Valentino of the star of the comic book film “Wonder Woman: 1984” left no one indifferent that evening. We have no doubt that a lot of interesting things happened to the actress, and all thanks to her original, and one might even say, avant-garde outfit.
Dakota Johnson, 2017
Stylist Kate Young put Johnson in a champagne-colored Gucci dress that made her look older.
Charlize Theron, 2010
Theron is usually the epitome of elegance on the red carpet, but not this time. The tradition was broken by lavender roses on the bodice of the Dior dress.
Uma Thurman, 2004
The actress herself called this Christian Lacroix look her biggest “embarrassment experience” in public.
Jennifer Connelly, 2002
Everything would have been fine with Jennifer's appearance at the Oscars in a Balenciaga dress, if someone hadn't decided to tie a chiffon scarf around her neck.
Bjork, 2001
Our list wouldn't be complete without a swan dress. It certainly lifts the mood, but it was clearly inappropriate at the main film ceremony of the year.
Kate Hudson, 2001
The gray gradient dress from Chloe and Stella McCartney was too overloaded with sequins, fringe and cutouts.
Kate Winslet, 1998
This Alexander McQueen outfit would look much better on screen in a costume drama than on the Oscars red carpet.
Whoopi Goldberg, 1993
According to the "Ghost" star, criticism of the costume, which foreshadowed her work in the Cinderella film, discouraged her from dressing up for a long time.
