Unfortunate prank: Emma Roberts spoke about calling Britney Spears
The 33-year-old actress recalled one of her childhood episodes associated with the famous singer.
When you're Emma Roberts and your aunt is Julia Roberts, it's no surprise that you might get a birthday call from herself... Britney Spears. Back in 1999, when the future actress was eight years old, the singer was at the peak of her popularity after releasing the hit “Baby One More Time” that same year.
Speaking to Live with Mark and Kelly on April 1, Emma admitted that she's "always nervous" about pulling pranks from anyone. Moreover, not only on this day. Her fear comes from childhood. “I am on guard all year round, especially with family and friends. But I've been wrong before. And very strongly,” she said and gave an example of one such “prank” that she still regrets. “It was my birthday, I think it was my eighth or ninth, and suddenly my mother and aunt called me to the phone: “Someone wants to talk to you.” And I: “Who is this?”
According to Roberts, on the other end of the line the unknown girl said: “Happy birthday, Emma. This is Britney Spears." But the girl didn’t believe the caller and thought it was a joke. "I looked at them (my mother and aunt), hung up and said, 'Mmm, that was nice.' And they: “No. It really was her."
Emma explained that she fell in love with Britney Spears’ work literally from the very first song. After realizing that the call was not, in fact, a prank, she began to persuade her mother and aunt to “get Britney back on the phone.” And when the singer was again on the other end of the line, Roberts became even more nervous and, after apologizing for the mistake, she was able to squeeze out the word “thank you” several times. “I still shake thinking about it,” the American Horror Story star added.
By the way, Kim Kardashian, a reality show and Internet star, recently became her colleague on the series. But Emma felt very comfortable with her, telling the TV program that she had known Kim and her sisters since childhood. They were both born and raised in Calabasas, California. And as a teenager, Roberts often visited the Dash store, which was run by the now famous family. “They all worked there from time to time, even before the TV show launched (in 2007), and I shopped there and talked to them.”
