Obi-Wan Kenobi: What We Know About It

Ewan McGregor as the beloved Jedi master will face off against Darth Vader on Disney+ this month.

Viewers have already taken a trip to Tatooine thanks to the Disney+ TV show The Book of Boba Fetta. But this is not the only visit to the desert planet in 2022. The exiled Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi will appear on the streaming service on May 25 with his own series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. In it, Ewan McGregor will return to the role he played before in the trilogy of prequels. The first trailer for the new project was released in March and the second trailer was released on World Star Wars Day, May 4.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced the series back in 2019. Let's talk about the details of the project that have become known by this day.

When does "Obi-Wan Kenobi" take place?

The plot begins after the events of Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith (2005) and nine years before Star Wars: Episode 4 - A New Hope (1977), at a time when the Jedi Order has all but ceased to exist.

If you're not familiar with Obi-Wan Kenobi, it's worth watching a few movies from the Star Wars franchise. In short, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi master who first appeared on screen in A New Hope. He was played by Alec Guinness at the time. In the film, he helps Luke Skywalker take his first steps into the larger world of the Force. Later in the film, Obi-Wan is slain by his former apprentice Darth Vader, whose real name, as it turns out, is Anakin Skywalker. He is Luke's father and a Jedi who crossed over to the Dark Side of the Force.

Having ceased material existence, Obi-Wan returns as a spirit (a Force ghost) to guide Luke in Star Wars: Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi (1983). He even provides a little help to Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and in Star Wars: Skywalker. Rise" (2019).

The prequel trilogy, which opened with Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Hidden Menace (1999), introduced us to McGregor as a young Van Kenobi and his teacher Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson). Qui-Gon discovered Anakin on the desert planet of Tatooine, but was killed by Darth Maul, and the responsibility of teaching the boy fell on Obi-Wan's shoulders.

Anakin succumbed to the Dark Side of the Force in Revenge of the Sith and became Darth Vader, then helped Emperor Palpatine destroy the Jedi when they founded the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan managed to survive this and flew to Tatooine with Luke, Anakin's son who did not know about his father, while Luke's twin sister Leia went to live with the royal family from House Alderaan.

What is known about the Obi-Wan Kenobi plot?

"During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire." reads Disney's official synopsis. In short, Kenobi looks after young Luke Skywalker from afar, from exile on the planet Tatooine, while simultaneously dodging the Empire's elite warriors, the Jedi hunters.

Who starred in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series?

In addition to McGregor as Obi-Wan, Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin in "Star Wars: Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones" (2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" will return to the screen as Vader. The 41-year-old actor has reviewed all the films in the franchise, including the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" (2008-2020) and "Star Wars: Rebels" (2014), to prepare for his role as Anakin, Entertainment Weekly reported in April.

"They (the writers) did a lot with the characters in those TV shows. And explored relationships more deeply," Hayden reported about Obi-Wan and Anakin. "There was some interesting material accumulated to explore. It was fun to go back and be revived in this world that keeps growing."

Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Pesse will return to the screen as Owen and Beru Lars, better known to Luke Skywalker as Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. During this time period, they raise Luke away from his villainous father, Darth Vader. You can also see young actor Grant Feely playing little Luke in the trailer.

In addition, the clip shows Moses Ingraham as Reeve the Inquisitor and Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor, as well as Son Gan as the Fifth Brother. Although Reva is a new character, the Grand Inquisitor and Fifth Brother have previously appeared in Star Wars: Rebels. Indira Varma, well known for Ellaria Sand from "Game of Thrones," will appear in the new series as one of the imperial officers. They will be joined by Kumail Nanjiani, O'Shea Jackson Jr.

None of these actors have been involved in Star Wars before, and Nanjiani told USA Today in November that his experience working on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was "absolutely wonderful." There is another actor who may appear in the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series nearer the end.

Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn died in "The Hidden Menace," but Neeson is back for the role in "The Clone Wars." He is the first Jedi to become a Force ghost and guide his allies in the material world. By the time the original trilogy was released, Obi-Wan had mastered this skill, which Qui-Gon taught him. And audiences are expected to see it in the new TV series. In an interview with Collider in 2020, Neeson said that he has "not yet been approached" to reprise the role, but it could happen.

Who wrote the music for "Obi-Wan Kenobi"?

90-year-old composer John Williams, who has composed music for nine films in the Skywalker saga, had a hand in the soundtrack and the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series. He was assisted by Natalie Holt, who was responsible for the music in last year's Marvel series "Loki."

Who else is involved in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series?

The new Disney+ TV show is being directed by Deborah Chow, known for her work on episodes 3 and 7 of the first season of "Mandalorean." The script was written by Joby Harold. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Ravan, Chow, MacGregor and Harold served as executive producers on the series.
