The teaser for Avatar: The Way of the Water collected 150 million views

A short video illustrating the long-awaited sequel to James Cameron's Avatar debuted online May 9. The film is set to premiere on December 16.

Avatar fans are serious about returning to Pandora. The first teaser for the 2009 sequel went online two days ago after its April premiere at CinemaCon. According to Disney and 20th Century Studios, the video gained 148.6 million views worldwide in its first 24 hours on various channels. THR recalled that this broke the recent record for "Star Wars" teasers, but fell short of the 202.7 million views that "Fast and the Furious 9" received on its first day of release online.

Along with "Avatar" stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore and C.H. Pounder will return to the screen in the sequel. The star of another Cameron film, "Titanic," Kate Winslet has also joined the cast of the new film, as have Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco and Jemaine Clement.

"Avatar: The Way of the Water" will hit wide screens on Dec. 16. The third film of the franchise is expected in 2024, the fourth in 2026, and the fifth in 2028.
