A remake of the TV series "The Squid Game" will be filmed in America

Viewers fear that South Korean director Hwang Dong-hyuk's original vision will be spoiled.

The South Korean TV series “The Squid Game,” directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, has taken the world by storm after its release on Netflix in September 2021 and has become a cultural phenomenon. In a short time, he became the leader in views on the streaming service, receiving the title of the most popular, non-English-language project of all time, covering the creator and actors with world fame.

The success made the TV show a benchmark for other filmmakers and even the subject of sociological research. Its gripping storyline, poignant social commentary and complex characters resonated with audiences around the world. But in order to embody his "child of love" on the screen, Hwang Dong-hyuk had to wait ten long years and those who would believe in his plan.

American filmmakers were the first to repeat the success of The Squid Game. Host Jeff Snyder announced the launch of the project on The Hot Mic podcast. On the one hand, this indicates the international appeal of South Korean content and its recognition, on the other hand, there are concerns about how the themes and messages of the TV show will be interpreted in the overseas version.

Hwang Dong-Hyuk did not fail to speak in person: “Of course, I am glad about this, but my joy is overshadowed.” According to the director, he is especially concerned about how complex moral issues will be reflected in the new project, in particular, the thirst for enrichment and the limits of what is permissible for a person in pursuit of profit.

The American remake of "The Squid Game" will confirm the trend in which more television series from the Land of the Morning Calm are getting carte blanche for development in the United States. In this series, one can, for example, mention the melodramatic project Love Landing (2019-2020). However, the opposite pattern is also observed, with popular English-language TV shows such as Suits being re-shot in South Korea with local actors in the lead roles.

Fans of The Squid Game, hearing about its American reshoot, began to express dissatisfaction on social networks. In their opinion, the idea will not lead to good. "The Squid Game original doesn't need an English or American original to become an international sensation and Netflix's top-rated TV show," one Twitter user recalled. “America is already an American remake of The Squid Game,” joked a second. “Please don't make an American remake. Just make a separate, American series that would become part of the Squid Game universe, ”wrote a third user.
