The release date of the series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has been announced

Donald Glover's series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" has been replenished with new agents. Based on the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the Prime Video project will star Alexander Skarsgard, Sarah Paulson, Ron Perlman, Eiza Gonzalez, Sharon Horgan, Ursula Corbero and Bill Campbell. They join previously announced Paul Dano, Michaela Coel, John Turturo, Parker Posey and Wagner Maurois. Which of them will play which character, Amazon prefers to keep secret for now.

Glover is working on the series with Francesca Sloane (“Atlanta,” “Fargo”). In addition to writing the script and solving other creative issues, Donald plays one of the main roles - John Smith. His on-screen wife and colleague Jane Smith is portrayed by Maya Erskine (PEN15). The project is not a remake of Doug Liman's spy film. Then the plot was built around the spouses who discovered that they were both secret agents working for rival intelligence agencies. Moreover, they were hired to physically eliminate each other.

The events of the series will follow two lonely strangers who enter into contracts with a mysterious spy agency. At first, they are not aware that this will force them to change their identities and become a married couple. When they plunge into a high-risk mission, their fictitious marriage begins to drift towards something more real. Will they be able to trust each other if their relationship is completely built on lies?

"The show is definitely going to go in a very different direction for a lot of people, which I think is a good sign," Glover told EW. “You can always go back and watch an old movie, but our project will give you a completely different feeling.” The audience will definitely be shocked. I just know that a lot of people love the old movie, so if they say, "Um," we haven't done a good job. I hope they will say, “This is better than the original,” and some will say, “This is much worse.”

For her part, Maya Erskine added: “Angelina and Brad are, of course, untouchable in a way that you can’t replicate. Both Donald and I are just different, so we were excited to play a couple that you might see as your friends or find something in common with yourself. You will see yourself in these characters, but they are spies. They created the appearance of a relationship in the backdrop of this spy thriller. Therefore, it contains all the subtleties, nuances and flaws of the real history of the relationship, with only one amendment that what is at stake is life or death. What will surprise viewers of this TV show most of all is that it really is about family life.”

All eight episodes of Mr. and Mrs. Smith will be available to stream on Prime Video starting February 2, 2024.
