Biographical drama about Amy Winehouse gets a release date

Focus Features will release the Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black on May 10, 2024. The film was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from a script by Matt Greenhalgh. They previously collaborated on the musical melodrama “Becoming John Lennon” (2009).

The plot of their new creation is built around Winehouse’s attempts to become famous and release an album of the same name (“Back to Black”). Narrated from the perspective of the main character, the film is a candid look at the woman who became a cultural phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most powerful albums of its time. The film stars Marisa Abela (Industry), Jack O'Connell (Ferrari), Eddie Marsan (Fair Game) and Lesley Manville (Mrs Harris Goes to Paris).

Amy Winehouse is considered one of the most talented singers of the 2000s, having sold more than 30 million album copies. Even now, her tracks are listened to more than 80 million times monthly on digital platforms. Longplay Back to Black (2006) launched her to the top of the musical Olympus, collecting five Grammy awards, including the nominations “Record of the Year” and “Song of the Year” for the composition “Rehab”. She died in 2011 in London at the age of 27 from emphysema.
