Robert De Niro will star in Barry Levinson's gangster drama
The script will be written by Nicholas Pileggi, who worked on M. Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990).
Robert De Niro will return to the genre that made him famous with such pictures as "By Midnight" (1988), "City by the Sea" (2002), "Righteous Kill" (2008) and others. The 79-year-old veteran will star in the new Warner Bros. film, which will be directed by another Hollywood maestro, Barry Levinson. Together they worked on "Wag the Dog" (1997), "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" (2008) and "The Wizard of Lies" (2017).
Nicholas Pileggi, who collaborated with De Niro on "Goodfellas", is responsible for the literary basis of the new crime drama. The plot will be built around real-life people, Vito Genovese and Franco Costello. These Italian-American gangsters led mafia clans in the mid-20th century. In 1957, Genovese plotted to kill Costello, but failed and decided to resign. However, the problem was that in the circumstances at the time, it was impossible to just "leave". De Niro will reportedly play both characters.
