The 41-year-old actress said that she does not want to play the “sad mothers” that she has been offered lately.

Kirsten Dunst complained about the lack of quality roles in Hollywood, which she is now experiencing after passing the 40-year mark. In an interview with Marie Claire magazine, she spoke about a career that has somewhat stalled since she received an Oscar nomination in 2022 for her supporting role in the drama The Power of the Dog (2021). Then she played a woman named Rose, who became the wife of a rich farmer (Jesse Plemons).

Despite the film's critical success, Dunst said she was upset by the role offers that followed its release. This was one of the reasons for her absence from the big screen for the past two years, until she finally found suitable work, starring in the new Alex Garland drama Empire Has Fallen. “To be honest, this is hard for me... because I need to fill myself up. The hardest thing is to be a mother and... to feel nothing, as if there was nothing left for me. And all mothers experience this - not just me,” Kirsten noted. “There are definitely fewer roles for women my age,” she added.

In Empire Has Fallen, she played a photojournalist trying to document—and survive—a war-torn United States. “When I read the script, I thought, I’ve never done anything like this.”

Dunst began her film career as a child. From the late 80s to the early 2000s, she appeared in such films as Interview with the Vampire (1994), The Virgin Suicides (1999), Bring It On (2000), and Eternal Sunshine. of Pure Mind" (2004) and the Spider-Man trilogy (2002-2007), in which Mary Jane Watson played alongside Tobey Maguire, who portrayed Peter Parker on screen.

In a conversation with Marie Clair, Kirsten also expressed regret that she did not talk more about the discomfort on set, similar to what she experienced on the set of Spider-Man. “It was a joke, but sometimes on the radio they called me girl-girl: “We need a girl-girl.” But I never said anything back... You know, like, “Don’t call me that.” You just accept it."

In Empire Falls, Kirsten was again played by her husband Jesse Plemons, as was the case in the previous film The Power of the Dog. They were joined on the set by Wagner Moura, Stephen Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman and others. The film will be released on wide screens on April 12.
