Top Gun: Maverick" will be released on May 25: What's known about it

This review is a complete guide to the sequel, due for release on the big screens in late May and later on digital platforms.

What is "Top Gun: Maverick" about?

This is the long-awaited sequel to the original "Top Gun" film ("Top Gun"), which has established itself as a fan favorite and an aviation movie classic. In the 1986 film, Tom Cruise played Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, an aspiring fighter pilot and part-time thrill-seeker. The action takes place at the elite U.S. Army school "Top Gun", where future military pilots are trained.

Together with his partner nicknamed "Goose," Maverick is not afraid to test the reserves of what pilots or technicians can do. As a result of a tragic incident, however, the hero begins to wonder about his skills and confidence. In large-scale Hollywood style, Maverick overcomes these obstacles and performs most of the risky piloting stunts brilliantly.

It's what keeps viewers eagerly awaiting the release of "Top Gun: Maverick." Fans of the film want to know what happened to the main character after it ends. What is his life like now? Is he still flying? The sequel is designed to answer these questions and more.

Who will appear in the new film?

Without exaggeration, the cast of the picture is impressive. Tom Cruise will return to the role of the iconic Maverick character. However, in the sequel we will also see many new faces - behind them are the venerable Hollywood actors. Here is a list of the main roles that will grace the screen. Val Kilmer as Iceman, Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Miles Teller as Bradley Bradshaw, Jon Hamm as Cyclone, Ed Harris as Rear Admiral, Monica Barbaro as Phoenix, Glen Powell as Hangman.

To the delight of "Top Gun" fans, Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Iceman, Maverick's rival friend. After the 62-year-old actor underwent serious treatment for throat cancer, it was unclear for a long time whether he would be able to talk and return to the big screen. Soon after work began on the film, however, producers confirmed his participation. It is expected to be more of a cameo than one of the main roles.

What will be the plot of the sequel?

As you can understand from the analysis of the information from the trailers and discussions, the action of the film will unfold 30 years after the events of the original picture. Maverick works as a test pilot and never thinks of leaving the cockpit. However, he finds himself back in Top Gun, albeit in a very different role than it was many years ago.

Maverick changes careers to train cadets from an elite school who dream of becoming the world's best fighter pilots. Plot twist: One of the recruits, played by Miles Teller, turns out to be the son of the hero's dead wingman, Goose.

All in all, the movie is built around Maverick facing changes in both his relationships and his profession. And that means viewers can expect even more spectacular aerial figures than they did in the first film.

When will "Top Gun: Maverick" be released?

Due to the global pandemic and other production difficulties, the film's premiere date was moved from July 2019 to December 2020, and then to July 2021 and later to November 2021, to finally confirm on May 25, 2022.

However, the film will be screened as early as April 28 as part of a special premiere at CimemaCon in the U.S., as well as on May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

It is not yet certain on which foreign digital platform "Top Gun: Maverick" will appear after its release in cinemas, but most likely it will debut on Paramount Plus, as Paramount Pictures will handle its distribution.

How did the actors prepare for filming aerial stunts?

According to Empire, for an authentic show on the screen aerobatics participants filming the sequel had to be trained in a special field camp. Tom Cruise himself organized it! As you know, the 59-year-old actor tries to personally perform stunt work in his movies and usually expects the same degree of immersion in the process and from colleagues.

It is reported that the cast, led by Cruise, was trained on a Boeing F/A-18 Superhornet combat plane. In particular, the actors attended flight school for three months, where they learned to withstand intense overload. Apparently, they did their best to make the film as realistic as possible. You can already know what they did from the trailers of the sequel and wait for the full version to be released.
