They have been kept in the Vatican since the 19th century.
Pope Francis has decided to return to Greece three 2,500-year-old fragments from the Parthenon, which have been in the collections of the Vatican Museums for more than a hundred years.
In a press statement, Vatican officials noted that the Pope is presenting these artifacts to the head of the Greek Orthodox Church, Jerome II, as a gesture of ecumenical dialogue between the two churches.
The Parthenon temple complex, located on the Acropolis hill in the capital of Greece, was completed in the 5th century BC. BC. and dedicated to the goddess Athena. Its decorative panels are a well-preserved example of ancient Greek sculpture and constitute the artistic and historical heritage of the country.
