No tickets to Qatar. Which famous soccer players will miss the 2022 cup

Insidious injuries deprived the upcoming World Cup of several bright stars.

The FIFA World Cup happens once every four years, which is why it is especially frustrating when a player who cherishes the dream of winning a place in the national team and playing in the main tournament of the planet, suddenly finds himself out of action. The World Cup in Qatar is no exception: quite a few stars will stay at home.

Marco Reuss (Germany)

Borussia Dortmund's attacking midfielder is probably the biggest loser of world soccer in recent years. Judge for yourself: in 2014 he flew to the World Cup in Brazil, getting injured the day before he left. Before the 2016 European Championship, he earned an injury in the lost German Cup final. The 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia was without Reuss, who tore his cruciate ligament. He was forced not to go to Euro 2020 due to severe fatigue after a covid season. And now Royce has not had time to recover from his ankle injury, a loss for the German national team.

Timo Werner (Germany).

And Royce is not her only loss. The recent Chelsea forward, now playing for Red Bull Leipzig, was injured in his first Champions League group stage match. There was a chance Werner could be fit in time for the World Cup but his injury is unlikely to wrap up in January.

Rhys James (England)

The 22-year-old Chelsea winger was injured a month ago and had expected to be fit for the World Cup, but he failed to make it. He won't be able to complete his rehabilitation until the end of the tournament in Qatar.

Paul Pogba (France)

Not a very successful year for the Roosters defender: Pogba was injured at Manchester United in spring, Juventus in summer and autumn. Sore shin, then meniscus, in September Paul decided to have an operation to solve the problem and have time for the World Cup, but as soon as he returned to training - and a new injury. There was no point in taking a defender to the World Cup who had not played a year.

Georginho Wijnaldum (Netherlands)

For Wijnaldum, 2022 also didn't go well. He moved on loan from PSG to Roma in the summer to get more playing experience with the World Cup in mind. However, in the first match, barely out on the field, got injured. After recovering, he broke his femur and was left without a trip to Qatar.

Diogo Jota (Portugal)

A big loss for the Red-Green: Jota largely defines their offense thanks to his versatility. The Liverpool forward left the field on a stretcher after October's victorious game against Manchester City. He will not recover from his calf muscle injury until the end of the year.

Filipe Coutinho (Brazil)

Another multi-talented attacking player will miss the World Cup. Without Coutinho, who was injured at Aston Villa's training camp, the Brazilians' chances in Qatar became lower as the coaching staff employed him, a classic top ten, in the center, as a sub, up front, and even on the wing. Alas, we won't see Filipe's skillful passing in Qatar.

P. S. Son Heung-Min (South Korea) and Sadio Mane (Senegal)

The Korean international suffered a very painful injury while playing for Tottenham in the Champions League against Marseille: He fractured the bone in his left eye. However, like Bayern's Senegal forward Sadio Mane, he was included in his national team's bid for the 2022 World Cup. There is hope that both players will play in Qatar - and that optimistic note at the end is just right.
