Swiss national team at the 2022 World Cup: record holders without big ambit
The Swiss, under the current system of drawing the world championships, have never managed to get past the first round of the playoffs.
We will continue to represent the members of Group G at the World Cup in Qatar with the Swiss national team.
Switzerland
The country of cheese, watches, banks, chocolate, lush green meadows and eternal neutrality - this is how the country of twenty-six cantons is seen by the average layman. And to a certain extent this is true. Switzerland does not participate in global events, but has a special place in Europe. There is a state since 1291. For three hundred years, confessional strife continued here, then for a short time these lands were under Napoleon, and since 1848 Switzerland has existed as a confederation.
In addition to the banking sector and the food industry, mechanics, electrical engineering, and pharmaceuticals are developed here.
Switzerland, among other things, is a developed sports power. Skiing is strong here, and one of the best ski resorts in the world, St. Moritz, hosted the Winter Olympic Games twice - in 1928 and 1948. Important sports structures are also based here - the IOC, FIFA, IIHF, the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Football is one of the most popular sports among the Swiss.
Switzerland national team
The first football club in the country appeared in 1860 thanks to English students. In 1904, Switzerland was among the founders of FIFA, and a year later the local team played the first match.
In 1924, the Swiss won silver at the Summer Olympics in Paris, suddenly reaching the final, where they lost to the Swedes. Until now, this is the only award in the history of the national team.
In 1934, the Swiss national team made its debut at the World Cup. In the 1/8 finals, she won against the Netherlands - 3:2, and in the quarterfinals she lost to Czechoslovakia - 2:3. In 1938, history repeated itself: the victory over the Germans - 1:1, pen. 4:2 and defeat from Hungary - 0:2. In 1954, the World Cup was held in Switzerland and they made a little noise here, beating Italy - 2: 1. True, after that the judges were accused of helping the hosts, but when, following the results of the group stage, both teams scored equally on points and the Swiss won even more convincingly in the extra game - 4:1, the skeptics calmed down. In the quarterfinals, the Swiss staged a carnival of attacking football, losing to the Austrians with a score of 5:7. This fight is still the most productive in the history of the world championships.
In the 70s and 80s, the Swiss did not reach the final of the World Cup, and since they returned, they have not gone beyond the 1/8 finals. However, this is a worthy result for them. In 2018, in Russia, Switzerland tied with the Brazilians - 1:1 and Costa Ricans - 2:2, defeated the Serbs - 2:1 and reached the playoffs, where they lost to the Swedes - 0:1.
Swiss national team stars
A number of players included in the bid for the 2022 World Cup are well known in Europe. Opponents in Group "G"
Brazil, Serbia, Cameroon.
Forecast for the performance of the Swiss national team
The Swiss look stronger than the Cameroonians and slightly stronger than the Serbs, and the Brazilians aren't as great as one might think. So, most likely, the guests from the Alps will again reach the 1/8 finals. And they will be happy with it.
