Team Ghana at the 2022 World Cup: task for tomorrow

We conclude the presentation of the participants of the World Cup in Qatar. The last team in group "H" is Ghana.

The territory of the future Ghana was a tasty morsel for the colonialists: Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, Prussia, Sweden and, of course, Great Britain claimed local gold. No wonder these places in western Africa were called the Gold Coast.

Ghana finally gained independence in 1957. The economy in the country is not the worst in Africa. Here, as before, gold is mined, as well as oil, gas, bauxite, diamonds, and manganese. But a large share of the profits comes from crop production - mainly the cultivation of cocoa beans: Ghana is among the world leaders in their production.

Ghana has been participating in the Olympic Games for seventy years, but so far has been content with four medals, among which there is no gold: three awards were won by boxers, and one by football players in 1992. Football is without a doubt the most popular sport here.

Since the early 1960s, the Black Stars have become one of the leading football powers in Africa. Four times - in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 - the Ghana national team won the Africa Cup of Nations. But the World Cup was not lucky for a long time: for the first time, the Ghanaians were among the strongest football players on the planet only in 2006.

And they performed quite successfully. At the group stage, the Ghana national team lost to Italy - 0:2, but won against the Czech Republic - 2:0 and the USA - 2:1 and advanced to the 1/8 finals, where they failed to cope with Brazil - 0:3. And in 2010, the Ghanaians went even further in South Africa. In the group they defeated the Serbs - 1:0, tied with the Australians - 1:1 and lost to the Germans - 0:1. Outperforming the Australian national team in terms of the best goal difference, Ghana in the 1/8 finals in extra time coped with the Americans - 2:1, and in the quarterfinals they staged a fiery match with Uruguay, in which they lost only in the penalty shootout - 1:1, pen. 2:4.

So far, this is the highest achievement in the history of Ghanaian football: in 2014, the Black Stars did not leave the group, and did not get to the 2018 World Cup.

In the zero years in Ghana there was a rather strong football generation led by Asamoah Gyan, Sally Muntari, Kwadwo Asamoah. The current line-up is weaker, but it also features Leicester defender Daniel Amarti, Arsenal midfielders Thomas Partey and Andre Ayew, who played for Olympic and West Ham, and Crystal Palace striker Jordan Ayew.

It is also worth watching the Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus. He showed himself perfectly in the current Champions League draw and has already interested the leading clubs in Europe: for the winter he is being asked to join Borussia Dortmund. Already now he can become one of the engines of the Ghanaian national team.

Forecast for the performance of the national team of Ghana

In terms of composition, the Ghanaians are inferior even to the Koreans, but thanks to their endurance and a good collective game, they can climb to the third line in the group. But taking away points from the favorites is unlikely to work - the skill is not right. Perhaps when many talented young people led by Kudus grow up in the Ghana national team - for example, at the 2026 World Cup - it will be possible to count on more.
