Uruguay squad for the 2022 World Cup: only old people go to Qatar
Godin, Suarez, Cavani and Caceres give a farewell tour at the World Championships.
We continue to represent the members of group "H" at the World Cup in Qatar. Next in line is the Uruguay national team, the first ever title holder.
Uruguay
The territory of Uruguay before the penetration of the Spaniards to the mainland was inhabited by the Charrua Indians. Then it belonged to Spain, then Portugal, then Brazil, and in 1825 Uruguay became independent.
Nestled between southern Brazil and northern Argentina on the Atlantic coast, Uruguay nevertheless has one of the most developed economies in Latin America. A significant part of the income is provided by the export of livestock products and tourism.
Football is the undisputed number one sport in the country, it is loved here, honored and expected that the Uruguayan national team will repeat the achievements of the old days.
Uruguay national team
The Celestinha played their first match in 1901 and pretty soon became one of the best not only in South America, but also in the world. Before the start of World War II, the Uruguayans won the mainland championship seven times, and in 1924 and 1928 - the football tournament of the Summer Olympic Games. It was the Olympic victories that became the main argument in favor of holding the first World Cup in 1930 in Uruguay. True, this initiative almost turned into embarrassment: due to the great distance, the World Cup was almost ignored by all European teams. However, the World Cup still took place. At the group stage, the hosts defeated Peru - 1:0 and dealt with Romania - 4:0, defeated Yugoslavia - 6:1 in the semifinals, and defeated Argentina - 4:2 in the final in the presence of 93,000 spectators, becoming the first world champions.
In those days, the Uruguayans played a very modern football, characterized by a quick exit from defense to attack, skillful dribbling, alternating long and short passes.
In 1950, the Celestinha repeated the success of twenty years ago. The group stage for her was limited to a duel with Bolivia (8:0), since the French who fell into the same group withdrew from the draw. And in the final tournament, the Uruguayans first drew with Spain - 2:2, then won a strong-willed victory over Sweden - 3:2, and finally over Brazil - 2:1.
Since then, the Uruguayans have become fourth at the World Championships three times - in 1954, 1970 and 2010, but they have not managed to get to the medals.
Uruguay All-Stars
As part of the Uruguayans for the World Cup in Qatar, there are enough players from the category of "who are over thirty." And almost all of them are world-class legends: goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, defenders Diego Godin and Martin Caceres, midfielders Matias Vecino, forwards Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. Younger guys like defender Guillermo Varela and midfielders Rodrigo Bentancur and Federico Valverde adjoin this stellar galaxy.
Opponents in Group "H"
Portugal, South Korea, Ghana.
Forecast for the performance of the national team of Uruguay
Diego Alonso's squad looks nice, but how convincing will the veterans be throughout the tournament? However, the Uruguayan national team must overcome the group stage - its composition is stronger than that of the Koreans and Ghanaians. And then everything will depend on the human resource: if the traditional militancy is multiplied by well-distributed forces, you can go far, even to the semi-finals.
