FIFA considers three formulas for the 2026 World Cup

In the next World Cup, 48 national teams will play for the first time.

FIFA is considering three options for the formula for the 2026 World Cup.

The first is 16 groups of 3 teams, the top 2 teams will make the playoffs and start with the 1/16 finals.

The second - 12 groups of 4 teams, the top 2 teams and the top 8 teams with the best 3rd place finishes will make the playoffs and start with the 1/16 finals.

The third - 48 teams will be split into two halves, with 6 groups of 4 teams in each. Two tournaments will be parallel and the winners will meet in the final.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in 16 cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
