He replaced Luis Enrique, whose contract, which expired on December 31, was terminated ahead of schedule.
De la Fuente has previously worked with Spain's youth teams and has also coached Athletic and Alaves.
At the World Cup in Qatar, the Spaniards were eliminated in the 1/8 finals, losing to Morocco (0:0, pen. 0:3).
