Such assumption was made by famous promoter Eddie Hearn, justifying it by the fact that the former champion has continued losing streak and lost his taste for wins.
But if he lost twice to undefeated Alexander Usik, Joshua's next opponent might be a quite comparable to his countryman Dillian Whyte.
And if Joshua loses there too, he may finally lose faith in himself and his motivation to get in the ring.
"A.J. wants a big fight this summer. The only option that makes sense to talk about is a rematch with Dillian White. For me, that would be the most exciting thing since we've been working together. If he loses, there's a good chance his career will be over. If he wins, if he wins by KO, then everybody will say he's back. And then we'll go for the championship all over again," said the specialist.
