Olympic rowing champion Vladas Chesyunas dies
He has won the two-man canoe world championship four times.
Soviet canoeist, Olympic champion Vladas Chesyunas died at the age of 84.
He won gold at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, winning the canoe-twos competition along with Yuri Lobanov.
In addition, Chesiunas was a four-time world champion in 1973-1975 in the twos competition.
In 1979, he became a defendant in the resonant "Chesyunas case", when he asked for political asylum in Germany during the World Cup in Duisburg, but later returned to the USSR. Until 2003 he worked as a coach.
