Wayne Gretzky: If Ovechkin beats my record, it will benefit the NHL
The legendary Canadian is impressed by the Russian striker.
Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky praised the human qualities of the Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin.
"He deserves all the praise he gets. And I'm very happy that I can be with a person who has a chance to break my record. It won't change my life, but the NHL will benefit, and this is the main thing," the striker said in airing on NBC Sports.
Ovechkin has 812 goals in the NHL regular season. He is 82 goals behind Gretzky's record. Nevertheless, according to the Canadian, the race for a record is not the main thing in the career of a Russian hockey player: more important is the Stanley Cup, which Ovechkin won as part of the Washington Capitals.
"The rest doesn't matter if you don't become a champion," Gretzky concluded.
