Georgy Kanareikin, legendary Soviet ice hockey champion, dies

Georgy Kanareikin, an illustrious Soviet athlete and six-time world champion in Russian ice hockey, died at the age of seventy-three.

His collection of awards includes dozens of medals for various achievements. As a member of the USSR team, he won six world championships, defeating the formidable Swedes and the tough Finns.

In the Soviet Union he played for Vodnik Arkhangelsk, Dynamo Moscow and Sibselmash Novosibirsk.

He won seven Soviet championship gold medals and three European championship cups.

After retirement he remained in the system of his favorite sport, worked as a coach, an administrator, taught in a sports school.

In addition, Kanareikin is included in the list of the best players of the USSR/Russia national team for 40 years of participation in the World Championships.
