Ian Nepomniachtchi retained his second position in the updated FIDE rating

The Russian has a chance to become the leader of the rating.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has updated the rating, in which the top three have retained their positions.

Norway's Magnus Carlsen is in first place with 2,853 points, Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi is second with 2,795, and China's Ding Liren is third with 2,788.

After Carlsen's refusal to fight for the crown, it will be played by Nepomniachtchi and Liren. The match starts on April 9th.

In case of a convincing success, Nepomniachtchi can overtake the Norwegian on points and become the leader of the rating.
